What are my chances?

Good for a deleted file or a recent format, if the medium has hardly been used since. On an SSD, a deleted file is often lost within minutes.

My disk is failing, what should I do?

Unplug it and do not plug it back in: it is a mechanical failure, for a specialist laboratory.

Can I try a software tool myself?

Yes, without installing or saving anything on the device to be recovered. What not to do.
