An office of six people, a router in the technical room, two repeaters bought at a supermarket. The video call freezes in the back room, and everyone has got used to it. It is the most common situation, and it can be fixed.
Three causes, almost always
- A single source for the whole building. Wi-Fi goes poorly through concrete, stone, floor slabs and mirrors. Two thick walls are enough to divide the speed by ten.
- Repeaters. A repeater receives and retransmits on the same channel: it extends the range by dividing the speed. Two repeaters in a chain, and there is almost nothing left.
- Badly placed access points. Put where there was a socket, not where the people are. Or too many of them, interfering with each other.
What works
Professional access points, each connected to the network by cable, managed together: devices move from one to the next without interruption, under a single network name. How many and where are decided after measurements on site, not by guesswork.
What about “mesh” systems?
These are access points that talk to each other by radio, with no cable between them. It’s better than repeaters and enough for a flat. In an office or a hotel, cable remains far more stable; the radio link is kept for places where you really cannot run a wire.
Wi-Fi 6, 6E, 7: should you care?
A little. Wi-Fi 6 handles a large number of devices at once better, which matters more than the maximum speed. Later generations add a less crowded frequency band that only recent devices use. There is no point paying for the latest standard if your computers are five years old.
Guests kept separate
Customers, patients, visitors: their devices have no business being on the same network as your files. A separate guest network gives them internet access and nothing else. The same goes for tills, cameras and connected devices, which are rarely updated.
Where to start
By measuring. A room-by-room survey shows where the signal is missing, where channels overlap, and how many access points are really needed. It is often fewer than feared.
